Why choose Bellavista Cloud Forest?

Cloud forests, correctly termed pre-montane/subtropical rain forests, cloak the steep slopes of the Andes from about 900 meters to about 2500 meters. They are forests of high biodiversity, with a profusion of little-studied wildlife and plants.

The Reserve’s goal is to educate the public about the significance of biodiversity in tropical cloud forests and the ever increasing importance of protecting these unique ecosystems. Bellavista and the Tandayapa Valley boasts over 330 recorded species of birds… and the list continues to grow! The Tanager-finch, Giant Antpitta, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Plush-capped Finch, Beautiful Jay, and White-faced Nunbird are all found here.

Birders and nature lovers alike thrill to the sight of brightly colored tanagers and the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, and everybody loves to simply sit in our four-story dome and admire the multitude of hummingbirds hovering around our feeders.

Bellavista’s resident mammals include the endangered Spectacled Bear, (recently captured by one of our “Camera Traps”), as well as the puma, Andean coati and tayra, and of course the newly discovered Olinguito! to name a few.

Leaving Quito we pass the Middle of the World monument and then descend a scenic mountain road with forested mountains almost all the way. Reaching the turn to Bellavista, you climb to the top of the mountain, again with fabulous views, where Bellavista lodge is perched. After breakfast, settle into your room, and enjoy the flurry of the hummingbirds and take a hike into the forest on our varied trails.

After a gourmet lunch, you can take a guided hike with a Bellavista naturalist, or explore on your own. A guided hike will acquaint you with the exuberant vegetation (orchids, bromeliads) of the cloud forest, its bird life, and the fascinating adaptations to life in this special environment. The evening is relaxed; we recommend you take time to admire the incredible variety of moths, many of which are unknown to science, and look for night birds such as the Common Potoo!!

After a refreshing night’s sleep, an early morning bird hike in the serene morning light is well worthwhile. At 8 a.m., an ample breakfast is served. Afterwards, perhaps explore on your own, or go with a guide to a waterfall! Every hike reveals something new even for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the forest every day!!

Lunch is served at one, and afterwards you choose your time of departure. Some people take a final hike in the forest, and some take a peaceful siesta, others observe the birds or admire the ever – changing patterns of mist, cloud and sunny mountain vistas
